New Married Name - Questions about updating documents

Post by Chris1218 » Tue Sep 20, 2022 5:50 pm

Hello everyone, hope you're all well.
Looking for some clarity please.

I was naturalised as a British Citizen earlier this year, and also issued a passport, making me a dual citizen.
I am getting married in my home country (Philippines), after which I will be updating my Philippine passport to my married name.

I understand UK has one-name policy, and my name needs to be consistent across both citizenships' passports.

My questions, if anyone could help answer, please:
- Do I need to update my naturalisation certificate to my married name, or can I just update my British passport?
- Are there any rules around how soon I can apply to change my name on my passport and be issued a new one? It will be under 12 months from the issue of my first passport, so wondering if I should update right away or wait. (And if I wait, will it be an issue?)

Thank you very much for any help and information you can share!

The naturalisation certificates are never updated - it shows the name at the time of issue only.
- Are there any rules around how soon I can apply to change my name on my passport and be issued a new one? It will be under 12 months from the issue of my first passport, so wondering if I should update right away or wait. (And if I wait, will it be an issue?)
You can change your name any time you wish - refer to https://www.gov.uk/change-name-deed-poll. You have to apply for deed poll first then apply for a new British passport. Existing passports are not updated. Best to plan for when you don't expect to travel, due to processing times.
