Student visa -waiting for result

I did ask this question before. But didn't get any reply from anyone (in similar situation) .

Please advice on the situation.

Someone has finished her studies and waiting for the result. She has applied for student visa extension on time. Her visa expired on 1st Nov 08 but the application is still in the HO. While the application is in HO, she got her result now and passed.

1. Now could she put another application (PSW) and ask HO to ignore the student visa application and consider the PSW application?

2. Next year she is going to complete 10yrs long stay. If HO accepts the PSW appliaction, would they consider the period between 1st Nov and now as a gap since she has applied for PSW after the student visa (though the original student visa extension on time and is under consideration)?

Please someone advice.
