visas/american in europe

Post by bunny80 » Wed Nov 26, 2008 12:15 am

i am romanian and my girlfriend is american, she's in europe on a schengen 90 days visa and i am trying to find a way for her to stay longer without having to go back to the US. would there be a way to do that? can she extend her tourist visa? i was also thinking about going to ireland or switzerland but i'm not sure if the swiss still give swiss tourist visas and if she'd have another 90 days or moving there would just count as any other schengen country since they.

any other countries or ideas about how she could stay here over 90 days and be legal? we don't want to go to romania for several reasons. cheers :(

90 days in every 180 - those are the rules. And Switzerland is Schengen now.

UK and Ireland arent tho - she could go there for six months if she is a genuine visitor.

Wanderer, Switzerland is NOT Schengen now. They will become part of the Schengen area from the 12th of December '08.
Bunny80, Swiss visas are still being issued until 30th of November '08. So if you really want your g/f to visit Switzerland be quick cos after 30th of Nov. Swiss visas will be phased out completely and only Schengen visas will be issued. See this: http://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/en/home/rep ... mpnot.html for all the details on how to apply

If you wish to stay together longer (permanently), and in an EU country other than Romania, she would have to become your family member. If you are not (planning to get) married, then it might prove difficult, as she would be treated as an 'extended' family member, and the rules are not so clear on that.

If you just want a few more months together, then the best bet would be to visit the UK or Ireland, or other non-Schengen country.
