If either parent held British citizenship (no matter how it was acquired) or ILR status at the time of the birth of a child in the UK, that British-born child would be a British citizen otherwise than by descent.
The British parent would need to prove how they acquired British citizenship at the time of the application for the child's first British passport.
The requirement for three years residence before the child reaches the age of 18 is for children born outside the UK.
