Council Ceremony - Question about location

Post by Britishincoming » Mon May 22, 2023 9:02 pm

Hi all,

I'm planning to apply for my citizenship next year and wondering if my name needs to be registered with the council in order to receive the invitation for the ceremony.

I'm planning to move during my application process and won't know where I'll be yet or if I can register myself on the new council in time. I don't mind traveling if I need to.

Thanks for the help ahead of time!

You can specify the council, otherwise you will be invited by the council where you live.

To build on @alterhase58's advice, you can specify the council where you wish to take the citizenship ceremony in your application.

If no council is specified, by default, your citizenship ceremony will be scheduled for the council where you lived at the time of application.

Once the application is made, it is difficult to move the choice of council. Therefore choose a council that is convenient for you in both the old and any possible new location and state that in your application.

I had specified the council of the office location where I work as my council of choice, for instance.

That's great - I thought you would have to register with a council through council tax or something in order to have the ceremony but it doesn't sound like it. Thank you for the feedback!
