Student dependent application timing

Post by waqar » Wed Jul 05, 2023 3:27 pm

Hi

Student visa application to a post graduate role for September intake from Pakistan. Can the student apply for his visa first and if successful apply for his dependents before travelling to the UK.

I couldn't find anything on gov.uk website to the contrary but the university has this on their website which is confusing.

"Your dependent should apply for their PBS Dependent visa in the country of which they are a national or where they legally live, dependent visas can be applied for:

- at the same time as you apply for your student visa, or
- at a later date if they cannot apply at the same time as you - this must be after you have completed registration and enrollment at the University and once you have started your course here."

Thanks

You won't find anything as such on gov.uk besides how long to apply before date of intended travel.
Don't see anything wrong in you plan however since your University gave a guidance contact them to seek clarifications.

Yes, but why make it so complicated and time consuming? Why not apply together?

Just to say, if someone was planning on applying separately because they want to re-use the same money to show for maintenance in the second application, that is a terrible idea.

I am concerned that you think your application might not be successful. Can you say what your concern is exactly?

I suggest you ask them what is their source of this information, and why they are saying someone cannot apply separately in the home country as you had planned to do, when the Immigration Rules permit it. While you are asking, ask them why they are using the outdated term "PBS dependant" and why they have mis-spelled enrolment with 2 L's!

Thanks for your replies.

There is a lot of negativity in the press and Home Office about students bringing their dependents hence we think it might be better if the student applies first which might increase the chances. A visit visa application was rejected in the past which is also another factor behind the nervousness.

Also, the funds required for the dependents haven been in the bank for 28 days yet which is another reason behind applying separately.

We could wait until funds are in the bank for at least 28 days for both before applying together.

This has absolutely no bearing on the application. That's not how visa applications work. ECOs cannot refuse a visa because the rules will be changing in future, only based on the rules as they are now.

This has no bearing on the application either, unless deception was used in the refused application.

Either is fine, but why not keep it simple and apply together. Your worries above about politics and visitor refusal are not relevant.
