British Citizenship application don’t have a tax code

Post by Jay_111418 » Fri Aug 11, 2023 8:52 pm

Hi hoping someone can advise on what’s best to do. My wife is in the process of applying for citizenship and has had ILR since 2012. She has been working part time the past few years but as a contractor and is classified as self employed however she earned well below the personal allowance. She doesn’t have a tax code as hasn’t submitted a self assessment as she didn’t think it was required if you earned below personal allowance- realise now this was probably a big oversight.

I was wondering how this might impact on her citizenship application? Is it best to delay the application and register for self assessment? Are there any other options for her if she wished to submit an application? Grateful for any advice anyone can offer. Thanks.

I was wondering how this might impact on her citizenship application? No - does your wife have a tax office reference number? Then quote that. The NI number will lead caseworkers to the tax records as well. If earnings are below threshold and this is the case then nothing to worry about. Is it best to delay the application and register for self assessment? If below threshold there's not action to be taken, certainly not for a nationality application. Are there any other options for her if she wished to submit an application? There's only one naturalisation application - Form AN. Grateful for any advice anyone can offer. Thanks.
Best not to overthink this - if no self assessment was required there shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for replying. No she doesn’t have a tax office reference number. My worry is whether she was required to submit self assessment despite earning below the personal tax allowance and whether that will impact her- I don’t think there will be any records against her NI number either.

There is no employment or income requirements for naturalisation application.

Thanks for the responses. Probably overthinking it but my concern was that caseworkers checking HMRC records as i think they do that for citizenship applications and not finding any records despite listing her as having been employed. Will speak to an immigration solicitor as well
