naturalised citizens should not have to pay this much to prove right to work

Post by Shotterxp » Thu Dec 21, 2023 1:00 pm

hello

I have a hard time understanding the rules and find current system a bit crude.

I was suddenly removed from work because the employer has discovered that documents i provided initially in 2022 to begin there work are invalid, before this time i had problems gaining employment. On one occasion one employer allowed me to work after i evidenced a certificate of nationality and registration , of which i bought at their behest, from the swiss embassy here in the uk, this document I’ve since discovered is not actually a valid one, in order to prove right to work, so that employer was misguided in this regard.

I was born in Switzerland but mother is british, so i’m a british citizen de facto. I do not hold a british passport nor a British birth certificate…

What irates me is , other british subjects can enrol for work in the uk using only their birth certificate and proof of NI at no extra cost - but i , it seems, have to fork out either 250 for an NS certificate or £155(!) for a fast tracked passport application ??

Why do i have to pay this while no one else does.

Are there exemptions or the possibility to apply for a waiver?

Why is a swiss certificate 40francs and a british one 250quid???

Was my employer wrong to dismiss me so abruptly (before christmas might i add) with no notice?**

Im eager for advice, each day i am unemployed is loss of earnings that i cannot afford.

I look forward to a response and still I have a glimmer of hope there is cheaper alternative.

Thanks everyone
Regards

**insult injury this is the first decent steady job i have managed to secure for a considerable duration, my last , to my detestation, i left in early 2014 subsequently and i was unemployed with patches of temp staff work in the interim due simply to lack of ‘unskilled’ work near where i stay.

A lot of British citizens have to pay for their passport application, trust me. You don't have to do it fast track.
Naturalized citizens, that you mentioned in the name of this topic, have to pay thousands in visa/ILR/naturalization fees.

You have to pay for a passport because, well, you weren't born in the UK. I had to pay for passport after naturalization, even though Irish born citizens have right of work in the UK just by showing their birth cert.

How come you never applied for a passport before?

You have to take your emotions under control, apply for a passport and sort it out for 10 years. You might be able to avail of charities to help you retrieve the documents, if you're destitute.

to pay thier fees to merely work (not travel) is the point im trying to drive home here.

That is vastly cheaper in Switzerland of all places is also a glaring injustice . (Forty francs and one week later its at your door) .

Unfortunately, a NS certificate is not worth the Government paper it’s printed on. If your mother is British otherwise than by descent (e.g. born in the UK or naturalised before you were born) and you were born from 1983, then try applying for a British passport.

My wife applied fast track .... £155 - British citizen! But needed to travel urgently.
I think everyone is unhappy with the cost of paperwork here but we don't have much choice, do we?

There are no cheaper alternatives, the government sets the fees for applications and official documents, they have a monopoly.
Citizens Advice can only explain to you what the rules are.

If this is your first British passport you can't fast track it - their turnaround times are fairly reasonable though (mine took 8 days in November). It costs £85.
