Renewal of expired BRP travel and timeline

Post by LeslieThomas » Sun Dec 31, 2023 1:51 am

Hi,
I'm a US citizen living in the UK with my (UK citizen) husband. I have an ILR and have been living here for over 12 years.

We've been trying to get back to the States to visit my elderly mom since ... well... 2020. Finally scraped together enough funds post-Covid to get airline tickets.

All our passports had expired in the meantime so I rushed around like a mad person and got them renewed, then booked the tickets for the end of March.

Like an idiot I totally forgot about my BRP. It's been tossed in the back of a drawer for years, I just never thought about it.

Anyway, turns out it has expiredthis month, and in looking at the HO govt website, it can be up to six months turnaround time for a renewal of a BRP for an ILR.

I'm in despair, is there anything I can do to expedite the process?

Any advice will be humbly listened to. Thank you.

Given that you have a US passport you are quite lucky. Just use your US passport at the e-Gate as all UK residents whose nationality allows them to use the e-Gate will be admitted as residents (not as visitors). Your BRP is not needed to enter the UK

There is no need for a replacement visa or a new BRP for now. In fact, a new BRP can take up to 6 months to be issued. You can worry about that when you return. BRPs will be gone in a year anyway: Information on eVisas as all BPRs will be phased out from 1st Jan 2025

Thank you SOOOOO much! I had long horrible dark night of the soul, worrying about this! I followed your links and emailed the Registered Travellers Service people, just to 100% clarify what documents I needed to re-enter the UK, and they just replied back to me that I only need my passport, and don't need to be a Registered Traveller.

I very much appreciate your wisdom and advice, Happy New Year!
