British Citizenship - address history & referee

Post by IreM99 » Sun Jan 14, 2024 8:10 pm

Hi,

I currently hold a settled status and in a few months I'll be able to apply for my British citizenship but I have a few questions about it.
In regards of my address history, I spend from March 2020 to August 2020 those months back home and didn't have any UK address as my UK tenancy finished just before I left. Will I have to put in my application the address where I stayed abroad then? Could the fact that I didn't have a UK address for those months represent an issue in my application?

Do I need to give the exact days about when I moved home in these years like DD/MM/YYYY or MM/YYYY will be enough?

In addition, about the professional referee that I'll be required to provide, would a retired nurse be okay to give me her reference or does it need to be someone who is still practicing?
Additionally, is a foreign person who has also gained British citizenship OK to provide references or does he have to be a British person "from birth"?

Many thanks,
Irene

Good question, I don't know the answer. Maybe other members can help. I believe but I'm not sure they want all addresses to be in the UK.

Do I need to give the exact days about when I moved home in these years like DD/MM/YYYY or MM/YYYY will be enough? At the best of your recollection is fine.

In addition, about the professional referee that I'll be required to provide, would a retired nurse be okay to give me her reference or does it need to be someone who is still practicing? Should be OK.
Additionally, is a foreign person who has also gained British citizenship OK to provide references or does he have to be a British person "from birth"? Perfectly fine.

Those three months away will of course count as absence from the UK which is legitimate. You could leave the gap in the address history and in a separate note explain the circumstances. It’s only three months and doesn’t imply a material issue.I’m just applying common sense here and even a caseworker shouldn’t disagree here as long as everything else is straight forward.

Regarding dual national referee, he is a British citizen in the UK, cannot be treated differently from natives. The day you receive BC you could act as a referee.

Hi Both, thanks for you replies.

Can I also check, will I need to provide proof of address for every single address where I stayed in these 5 years? In 2020,when i relocated in the UK I stayed at some address only for 1 month.

In addition, for some other addresses where I stayed, the only proof I have is the tenancy agreement. Will that be enough?

Thanks,
Irene

No proof required - you are not asked to provide proof of address.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.
Sorry, I thought that I would have been required to provide proof of address for each address where I lived.
What do I need to proof then and what documents can I start to gather together?

You are proving residency - by way of official type documents, such as P60, Council Tax bills, HMRC Tax documents/correspondence, GP documents, letter(s) from employers confirming you have worked for them (i.e. from/to dates). They don't necessarily have to have your address on it. Bills or Statements are not accepted.

Just showing an address on paper doesn't necessarily mean you are residing, you could be living abroad.

Hi everyone,

I'm in a similar situation (received an Application Update email, asking for "5-year address history"). There are 2 differences though:

1. In my case during 2020 I was absent for 4 months and stopped renting during that time. Upon returning I first took Airbnb for 2 weeks and then lived with a friend of mine for 1 month. Only then I started renting a permanent flat. Should I provide these exact details? Should I try to somehow comment in the email that in the first case I stayed in Airbnb and in the second with a friend of mine?

2. It turned out I messed up one date of my residence, i.e. the month was inaccurate in the initial application. When I send a new list of dates, should I specifically emphasise this in the email?

Response from alterhase58 also applies to you, don't have to go by month to month to prove this

My situation is very similar to yours, In 2019 I was away in my home country for 4 months and the lease was finished at that time. then returned to the UK and stayed at my mate's place for 2 weeks until new leases started. two weeks ago HO required me to provide 5 5-year address again but without a gap and include any overseas address.
