I have a question. I'm an EU national and I'd like to become a cross-border worker. I would like to live in Northern Ireland and work in the Republic of Ireland. Unfortunately I have not found anywhere, not even on the government website, how to achieve this. All it said was that I had to apply through the British points based system. As an EU citizen, I have the right to work in the Republic of Ireland but I do not have the right to live in Northern Ireland without the appropriate permit. Please, which permit exactly should I apply for?

I don't think there's a permit for your circumstances.

Essentially, what you want to achieve from UK immigration law point of view is to just...live in the UK. As a third country national, because Brexit, you cannot do this any more.

3. You live in Northern Ireland and work in Ireland
If you lived in Northern Ireland (or another part of the UK) before the end of 2020, you must apply to continue to live there through the EU Settlement Scheme. You have a right to work in Ireland.

New residents from 1 January 2021 - If you plan to move to Northern Ireland and work there, or to live in Northern Ireland and work in Ireland, you must apply for UK residence through the Points Based Immigration System.

You need to either find a job in NI and get a Skilled Worker visa (or any other visa that fits your circumstances), which would move you to NI compleetely, or live/work in ROI solely on your EU passport.

The Common Travel Area agreement covers British and Irish citizens only and allows them to live and work on either side of the border.

It does not cover their non-British/non-Irish family members nor does it cover other EEA citizens in Ireland.

To either work or live in the UK, you would need to qualify for a Skilled Worker visa (after being sponsored by a UK employer with a valid sponsorship license) or qualify for some other visa, all of which would have costs and minimum residence requirements.

It’s worth noting that the CTA was created 101 years ago this year, and was unaffected by the EU regulations as they applied before brexit or post-brexit UK regulations. I sometimes see misconceptions about its operation.
