Settle Debt For Less Effect on BC

Post by Delta0909 » Fri Feb 23, 2024 7:02 am

Hello,

I am planning to apply for the British Citizenship, I have settled two debts for less (Full and final settlement offers) and also have another bad debt of 6yrs old. Wha are the likely effects of these debts on my application, please? Can my application be refused? or should i consider paying the debts in full before making my application? Any advice will be highly appreciated.

Debt in itself is not a problem, as long as you comply with all arrangements to clear the debt, or you are in the process of making arrangments. From your post it looks like you are in a good position and shouldn't have any impact on the application.
Where it could be a problem is if you are are a serial defaulter, don't comply with CCJs, serial bankruptcy, etc etc.
If you are in control of your debts you don't have to disclose how much you owe. CCJ should be disclosed with details but shouldn't impact the application. Best to check your credit reports.

Thanking you for taking time to respond to my enquiry. However, i find your response somewhat generic and not directly addressing the situation narrated specifically. My understanding is, keep a good financial record is part the requirement for good character; are you saying settling debt for less and have a debt converted to bad debt are irrevalent to making a BC application? My credit score isn't great at the moment but certainly not got a CCJ, all other debts owed are being promptly managed under a payment planned agreed to, in the last 3years, with no payment missed. If you could kindly address my issue specifically, rather than being generic; this would be highly appreciated. Thanks

We can only comment generally on debt related issues based on what the good character guidance and members tell us about outcomes.
We can also not predict whether this or that scenario will or will not be an issue. That’s the character of GCR.
If you are willing to apply now you need to summarise your debt position, stick to the facts, explain your actions and current position.
