visa acquired now what!?

I am a US citizen and my husband has acquired his visa, we have till Feb to move... We are visiting in December for Christmas and i was wondering if he has to turn in his visa packet when we go through immigration at the airport at that time or when we actually move in Feb? And if so is he allowed to go back to the UK after he receives his visa? As we are going for christmas we were wondering if we can come back to the uk to finish packing or will we have to do our big move in december when we visit? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps more info would be helpful: what visa, when aquired, etc
