Applying for Naturalisation with an expired passport?

Post by SteevenSS » Tue Apr 23, 2024 8:48 pm

Hello there,
So my passport of origin expired a few months ago. I used it as identification to my Life in the UK test.
I do have a valid driving licence as part of ID.

Will I be able to apply for naturalisation online with my expired passport and my valid driving licence or should I have it renewed? I don't mind renewing it but if I don't have to then I wont as I would be saving 100 pounds, and once I get the British one, it'll become pretty useless anyway

My indefinite leave to Remain residence permit visa is stamped on an even older passport which wasn't a problem when I applied for my father's naturalisation online, but he did have a separate original passport that was valid.

Thank you.

Driving licences are not allowed as ID for the application.
Normally ILR holders just need to provide their stamped passports as proof of residency. If passport is expired you should provide proof of residency for the duration of the expiry period, official documents such as P60s, DWP Benefits/Pessions, NHS correspondence, HMRC documents, or similar. Note that utility bills or bank statements are not accepted.

FROM THE AN- GUIDE

EVIDENCE OF INDENTITY.
If you were issued with a Biometric Residence Permit, you must provide/use it in support
of your application, alongside:

• Your passport* or
• National identity* card or
• Home Office travel document* or
• Home Office entitlement card* or
• Home Office ARC letter* or
• Your birth certificate or
• Your photo driving licence* or
• A bank, building society or credit card statement issued to you within the last 6
months

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS
• Your passports
• If you are unable to provide your passport, explain why and supply letters from
employers (including start and finish dates), payslips, P60s, educational
establishments or other government departments indicating your presence in the
United Kingdom during the relevant period

Seems like they do allow a driving licence and bank statement for evidence of identity at least.
My passport expired 2 months ago, i guess i can provide my payslips for the last 2 months and bank statements a proof that I've been here for the last 2 months...

I just hope they still don't make a fuss about not having a valid passport?

Ok in the DL as identity.
Just explain the expired passport and as you suggest add a couple payslips. Wouldn’t expect a fuss, it’s not an uncommon scenario especially in cases where PP renewals are not straightforward or sometimes impossible.

It happens that people have an expired passport when applying. Explain that this is your situation in a cover note and what documents you are attaching instead.
