Travling outside UK while registration as BC application is ongoing

Post by bh123 » Mon May 06, 2024 8:03 pm

Hi All,

I applied for MN1 - registration as BC for my 7 year old daughter. We have a requirement to travel outside UK sometime mid Jul 2024 and it looks like there may be some issue with the application state

MN1 Applied Online : 14th March, 2024
Biometrics : 4th April, 2024
  • If the application gets processed successfully sometime early July, I wont have enough time to apply for British passport. How can she enter back into UK ( 1st week of September )
  • if the application gets processed successfully during her travel aborad, how can she enter back into UK ?
Thank you for your time in reding my query.

Regards

What's her status now? Does she have a BRP which is valid past September (so it covers her trip)?

If yes, no issue - use BRP when traveling abroad and explain the situation when entering UK.

Receiving the certificate may take a few extra days/weeks, so if it's processed in July, you won't have a certificate straight away.

Thank you for your reply meself2. She is on ILR will BRP valid until December 2024. As I see BRP becomes invalid the moment BC gets approved. Is it worth emailing the border control at the port of entry to ensure that she will be allowed in ?

Not sure about whether it is the case technically (I'm more into nitpicks of Irish citizenship), but it doesn't make the ILR card disappear -> it'll do just fine to get on a flight to UK.
I don't know about the eVisa system though and if it'll throw a spanner in the works, but not much is known about its progress.

Regarding whether or not she'll be allowed in, she's a British citizen assuming her registration was approved - they can't not let a citizen in.

Thank you meself2. This makes sense logically, but then each country has its own specifics with regards to these things.

Anyone with knowledge of British Citizenship/Immigration, can you shed light on my query?

I would say you are slightly overthinking. It can happen that a registration application is processed while applicant is abroad, your daughter will be let back in as meself2 indicated. I would also say that it is not definite that your daughter's application will happen in July as it will only have been 4 months since you applied and these applications take 6 months as a standard processing time. If however she gets approved closer to when you need to travel, you will need to promtply apply for her UK passport before you travel.

Thank you 'contorted_svy'.

Yes this is my worry as this can potentially disrupt travel plans massively.

I had applied for my son's registration 3 years back ( son born in UK to parents who are ILR at the time of birth ) and the application was processed in 3 weeks time. I heard of similar stories from my friends and thought that this application too would be much quicker and not 6 months of wait time. It looks like this is taking much longer at the moment

Each application gets assessed on a different timeline and the HO may have a different amount of caseworkers at any given time. You can only wait and see - as you say your travel plans could be disrupted, but it can happen when applying for citizenship.
