BRP return - need advise

Post by ice_candy_me » Wed Jul 17, 2024 6:43 pm

Hello Experts,

I wanted to ask something in regards to my Naturalisation, I was approved last week and 'm so grateful for it. Thank you so much to this board for helping us.

I had a quick question on when should I return my BRP card, is it after the approval email or after receiving the naturalisation certificate?

I'm confused and I don't know what to do

The HO expects you to return your BRP once you attend your ceremony and get the naturalisation certificate so do not return it yet as you are not yet British and your BRP is proof of you having a valid status.

That being said, there has only been one reported case on this forum where someone got fined at the border for using their BRP after becoming a British citizen. If you have children born after you got ILR, whose claim to British citizenship can be physically evidenced by your ILR BRP being issued before child's birth, it is usually advised on the forum that you keep it safely.

I don’t think there was no substantiated report of a fine being levied.
Anyway, the BRPs are scrapped by the end of the year. Can’t imagine the Home office will pursue offenders, if they ever did…
