Rental agreement for dependent Visa

I am planning to apply for my husband's dependent visa from outside the UK. Is a rental agreement absolutely necessary for the visa application? If not, what other documents can we provide instead? Could we state that we plan to live with friends until we find suitable accommodation, and provide proof that their place has enough space for both of us and is not overcrowded? My tenancy ends soon, and I would like to get a new one after he moves here. Thanks!
