Passport Application - Secrion 4 makes no sense

Post by kankerot » Mon Aug 12, 2024 3:57 pm

Section 4 is confusing - applying for first British Passport for naturalised UK citizen - gained nationality in 2016, current UK and US citizen.

Applying for citizenship on the basis of having a naturalisation certificate and not through parents so does section 4 still need completing?

Section 4 states

You need to fill in this section if:

the passport is for someone under 16
you are applying for your first adult passport
you are applying to replace a passport that has been lost, stolen or damaged
you are applying to extend your passport

Give all the details for both parents of the person named at section 2 of the application form.

For nationality purposes parents are defined in law as ‘mother’ and ‘father’. Nationality by birth cannot always be gained through either parent’s national status. This includes parents who are of the same sex. Because of this, it is important that the ‘mother’ and ‘father’ are entered in the correct boxes.

If either parent was born on or after 1 January 1983, or were born outside the UK, please give the following details in section 8 of the application form. Either: the full name, town, country of birth and date of marriage of your mother’s or parent 1’s parents and your father’s or parent 2’s parents, or details of your parents’ claim to British nationality.

The form caters for all scenarios/pathways to British citizenship but is a bit "clunky"...
You can safely ignore the parents section, or fill in just enough to let you move on.
It will have no bearing on your application.
Your claim to BC is via naturalisation of course, as you rightly pointed out.

Fill just enough?

Is it better to do this form online or go via the post office?

Yes (did the same online years ago, no issue, remember you are a British citizen and basically entitled to a passport)

Is it better to do this form online or go via the post office?
personally I'd go online, saves a bit of money and much more efficient, and you can track online. Paper forms takes extra time to process. Also PO staff don't always get it right (and are not HMPO agents)!
