Name spelling <> Naturalization Certificate

Post by human_ie » Fri Oct 04, 2024 1:18 pm

Hi all, my question is the same as discussed in this closed thread, but I hope someone can share a bit more experience.

In short:
1. My name (as per the birth certificate) is spelled in Cyrillic letters;
2. My current passport transliterates my name into Latin alphabet in a way that's not very practical. Think of it as "Christine" vs "Khrystyna": both are essentially same names, with the latter being a technical symbol-to-symbol transliteration from Ukrainian – just imagine how would someone spell it here in Ireland :)
3. I heard many do this: get the invitation for the ceremony -> send them a properly transliterated translation of the birth cert -> get their naturalization certificate with the name spelled as requested.

For those of you who've done this, two things I wanted to ask about:
1. When do you ask the Dept of Justice to change spelling: before or after paying EUR 950?
2. When you get your naturalization cert and apply for your passport, how do you explain the spelling mismatch between the cert and foreign passport to the Gardai? I heard stories of this being a nearly impossible thing to do, but I'm wondering if that was just someone's unfortunate experience.

Thank you!

Your passport should contain your name in Latin letters.

If your passport says Khrystyna, that’s the name you use and that’s the name that shows up on your residence permit, your bank statements, your payroll etc.

The citizenship department will not accept any other form of names.

You should try and get your citizenship application approved first, and then get your name changed by deed poll. Once your name is officially changed, you can go to banks/utility/employer and ask them to change your name there.

You can only get the name in your Irish passport changed after using your new name for at least 2 years, as evidenced by bank statements/utility bills etc.

And finally no need to worry about people not knowing how to spell your name. Legal names in your passport are only for official purposes. They don’t have to be the same as your ‘preferred name’ in your daily life.

Joe Biden’s first name is in fact Joseph, even though everyone in the world would call him Joe Biden instead of Joseph Biden.
