British Citizenship - new passport not stamped

Post by Zeewerng » Sun Oct 20, 2024 8:36 pm

Hi all,

I am applying for the British Citizenship via non-EU ILR route (granted Nov 2022).

It is asking for proof of living in the Uk for 5 years. Long story short, I've lost my passport (British overseas passport issued in HK) in Sept 2019 when I was on holiday.

I've managed to enter UK with an emergency travel document and get a new British national overseas passport issued by HMPO on 17th October 2019. And because of that (I've applied the new passport in UK), there was no stamp saying when I entered the country in October 2019 and the first stamp that showed I entered the UK was Dec 2019 when I came back from a holiday.

So the question,
1. my passport was issued in uk on 17th Oct 2019, does that means it cover the 5-year period? [OR]
2. Because the first stamp on the passport that showed i entered the UK was Dec 2019, I will need to write letters to explain everything.

Many thanks

Do you have proof of living in the UK by means of other government department documents (P45s, P60s, electoral registration, tax returns, benefits statements/applications, etc)?

You can use them to prove residence in the UK.

Yes I do have p60s, I shall provide that as a proof of my residence.

On another note, my wife, who is also applying for citizenship, is able to provide her current and previous passport as proof of living, does she still require to provide the p60s or just passport is sufficient?

Thank you so much.

If her passports are stamped then no further residency documents required. Each applicant is assessed separately.

Employment query - british citizenship

Post by Zeewerng » Sun Oct 20, 2024 10:42 pm

Hope someone would be able to help.

I am currently applying for british citizenship via ILR route. I am self employed since apr 2023. I worked for two different companies between 2019 and apr 2023.

During the application, I have selected self-employed and is asking me to provide the most recent tax year account statement and corresponding HMRC tax return as proof of self employment.

I am able to provide the most recent tax year account statement and p60 for 2021, 2022 & 2023, however, I am unable to retrieve the p60 for 2020.

Can I submit my payslips for year 2019 - 2020? or submit 2019 p60 instead? Or any other document I should submit?

Many thanks

It's only asking for the self-employed tax return, not the P60s, as you have declared yourself self-employed.
[CORRECTED] Provide the P60s you have and perhaps a council tax bill for the missing one.

NB. Please don't start a new thread for each question, continue here!

Thank you for your reply.

The requirements states that i need to provide "most recent tax year account statement and corresponding HMRC rx return as proof of self-employement".

So I am only required to submit HMRC tax return for year 2023/24 as proof of self employment? If no, do I still need to submit the p60s from my previous employment before I gone into self-employed?

Do I also need to include a council tax bill for the missing one as I believe that is only for proof of living requirement.

Thank you for your help.

The tax return you would have to provide anyway (because you don't pay tax under PAYE)..
The P60s or other official documents are for proving residency (not proving employment) because you don't have the stamps in your passport.

Submit payslips for 2019-2020, the P60s you have, and for self employment both tax return and the SA302.

Happy New Year in advance,

Thank you for previous reply.

Another question is because I am holding both BNO and HK passport (recently applied, granted beginning of 2024). I am using my BNO passport in the naturalisation application, however, I will need to also provide my HK passport as proof of living in the UK for 5 years.

Do I need to bring the unexpired HK passport to the appointment as well?
Also, I can't seem to find a way, during the application, to declare my HK passport?

Many thanks
