Applying for a first passport for expat baby

Post by 0M0M » Mon Jan 27, 2025 3:32 am

Hello there,
For context, we are a British expat family living in Malaysia. We, the parents, are both British by naturalisation. Applying for a passport for the newborn, please could you tell me the exact documents I should send to the UK and whether they should be originals? I don’t think I need to send grandparents documents as stated in their lists.
Thanks in advance

Passport application caters for all different scenarios, but grandparents documents are not required.
Child's claim to British citizenship is through parents being British. The application should tell you which documents are required, and whether you may be directed to use a local visa processing centre for document submission.
Documents, at a minimum, are a parent's naturalisation certificate (only one parent's is needed) and child's birth certificate showing parents' names. HMPO can ask for additional documents. Not sure what list you are looking at but it's normally a choice from a list. Generally documents are required in original but again, the application should confirm this.
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.
Please do not send me private messages asking for advice.

Note that British passports from abroad take much longer. It could be quicker to apply for another passport, if child is entitled to it, and then get a ROA sticker.
All advice comes from personal research and experience and should not be regarded as professional opinion.

Thanks for this, I’ll be sending the birth certificate, naturalisation and marriage certificate. Hopefully should be fine.
