British Passport for Child Born in Pakistan

Post by Ayesha123 » Wed Jan 22, 2025 2:06 pm

Hi,

The father is British Citizen by naturalisation and mother is going to complete 5 years this year in September.
Is it possible to give birth in Pakistan and easily acquire British passport for the baby?

You are free to give birth anywhere in the world.
British passport applications for children may take around six months.
There's another option, apply for a Certificate of Entitlement-Right of Abode, taking about 8 weeks per the guidance: https://www.gov.uk/right-of-abode/apply ... ntitlement
However, child would need a foreign passport into which the CoE is affixed. So the wait for a local passport needs to be factored in.
Once in the UK child can apply for a UK passport.
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.

British passport applications from abroad are very slow. Probably quicker to get a Pakistani passport and then apply for a Right of Abode sticker. Please note in this scenario your child will be British by descent, i.e. won't be able to always automatically pass down British citizenship.

Thankyou so much for your reply.
Another question, my husband's sir name is different on the naturalisation certificate. He had changed his sir name years ago, if given reason would it be okay in the application form. Hope it doesn't cause any problem.

This may cause a problem if his name is different on passport and naturalisation certificate. Does your husband have a deed poll or anything similar?

Yes, he thinks he has got it somewhere.
The Right of Abode Certificate and getting a pakistani passport route sounds much better given the time frame. Would his sir name still matter in this case?

This I would not know, but best to get the name deed poll as it will be needed eventually.
