Notifying government about new marriage abroad

Post by AldoRaine » Sun Mar 09, 2025 1:55 pm

Good day everyone!

I have moved to the UK on Skilled Worker visa more than a year ago now, and got married to my other half only a few months ago back at home. Due to some change in the plans, my partner has not moved to the UK yet, and we are planning to apply for dependant visa for them in a year from now.

In the meantime, should I inform UK government and/or HMRC that I am now married or should I just keep extending my BRP as usual until we just apply for Dependant Visa for my partner?

I know that if my partner was already here, I would have to inform HMRC as it could affect my tax code etc., but as my partner does not live in the UK yet, should I still inform them?

I am asking as to avoid any potential tax penalties or trouble for us in the future when applying for ILR/UK passport.

The only tax benefit you might get is the "Marriage Allowance" (https://www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance).
You can claim this if your wife's earning are below the tax fee allowance, or are nil. You wouldn't be penalised if you don't claim but it might increase your personal allowance by £1260 if you do. This is not tax advice, the government may change tax laws.
Wife needs to be in the UK, you can't register for anything until you & wife has a National Insurance number.
This is just my opinion as a member of this forum and does not constitute immigration advice.
