Applying for Irish Passport Without Indian Birth Certificate

Post by BLS1507 » Thu Mar 06, 2025 7:26 pm

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice on applying for an Irish passport without an Indian birth certificate.

My background:

I was born in India but have no birth certificate.

I became a naturalized British citizen and now live in Northern Ireland.

I was granted Irish citizenship in May 2023.

When I applied for an Irish passport, they requested my original birth certificate, which I don’t have.

I have no family in India and haven’t been there since childhood, so I have no idea how to obtain one. Since I don’t have an Indian passport, I also can’t visit the Indian embassy in Dublin for help.

Has anyone faced a similar situation or knows what alternative documents I could provide? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Though I have not applied for an Irish passport. I too did not have a birth certificate however my parents have made a legal affidavit, registered; that document mentions that, i was born on so and so date and both parents have named me "..." and I have been using that document as a legal replacement for lack of birth certificate not sure if it works in Ireland.

If you have no one in India, I think you can approach a lawyer in India with OCI, 10th class certificate. I think those documents should link back to your family and have this legal affidavit.
