Seeking Advice on Foreign Birth Registration with Expired ID Documents

Post by psych_pii » Tue Feb 18, 2025 3:10 pm

Hi all,

Hope everyone's keeping well. I'm finally getting round to sorting out my foreign birth registration as my grandfather was Irish. I know where to get the birth/death certificates etc from.

My issue is, however, is to do with my father. One of the requirements is a photocopy of current state-issued photographic ID document (i.e. passport, drivers licence, national identity card). Unfortunately my Dad had a stroke 5 years ago and all current state-issued ID documents his side are expired and he won't be in a position anymore to renew these. Would I still be able to send a photocopy in the application despite these being expired?

If anyone has been in a similar situation I'd appreciate some pointers.

I would use any documents you have. Anything you can like expired license etc. Can you add his Social Security statement of benefits you can get & print on the SS website through his account there? Or the mailed yearly statement of benefits? Tax returns? Any other proof of other benefits? Also, depending on the state we applied for and received a State Id for my MIL in Mass, USA for her Italian application. Any of the documents like utilities they ask for just expand on those. We did include notarized ones where we could get them notarized. GL!

If you can have a doctor write a letter explaining his condition that would be good. Notarized is better. Include copies of any old IDs. Again---notarized with a declarative statement by you is best . You should also have a notarized (by a lawyer , if possible) statement written by you explaining the situation. Send these things then see what they say. Good Luck
Remember, notarizing anything is basically making it a government document. They like that government stamp.
