Extending visit visa for medical purposes

My family member is currently visiting the UK and wants to extend visit visa for medical reasons. Is this possible?

What is the medical reason? Is it something that would prevent them from boarding a plane? Can the airline give them an official letter to that effect?

Is it a chronic (long-term) condition or an acute (recent) condition? Are there hospitals in their home country that would cover the situation?

Do they have health/travel insurance that would cover the condition? Keep in mind that the NHS will charge them 150% of the cost of any care provided.

Yes, it is possible.

UKVI explain the requirements: https://www.gov.uk/standard-visitor/extend-your-stay One of these is being able to pay for the treatment.

Also note that as part of the requirements, the applicant needs to attend an appointment to collect biometrics.
