transit through London via British Airways

Post by ahmedbaz » Tue Apr 22, 2025 10:57 am

I hold a Stamp 1 visa and currently live in Ireland. I am planning to travel to my home country with a transit through London via British Airways. The transit time is less than 6 hours. Do I need a visa to transit through London?

What matters most is the passport you hold. You need to check if your country needs a transit visa.

Secondly, if you have to change airports, then you surely would need one. If you're a visa national.
No sin in failing, you just have to try and try again!

Usually, you do not need a transit visa if you have a valid IRP card and you are transitting via the UK to a third country, even if you 'enter' the UK (more practically speaking, your flight will arrive at a domestic arrival entry point anyway).

You will, however, usually need a standard UK visitor visa (not a transit visa) if you travel from a third country to Ireland via the UK, as the UK treats Irish routes as domestic routes and you must go through border control in order to fly to Ireland.

In both cases, your airlines and the UK border controls both have the rights to admit or refuse you entry. British Airways are usually quite lenient in these cases although there is no guarantee that they will let you get onboard without a visa. It is always recommended to apply for a visa.
