ILR changes

Post by academic711 » Mon May 12, 2025 10:44 am

Hello

I am sorry if its too early to ask but I was wondering if anyone has any information on when the new changes to ILR will be implemented? I will be applying for ILR with my dependents mid June (based on Global Talent)- does anyone know from past experience that how long the policies take to be implemented? Or if the date has already been announced and any impact on GTV based ILR application?

Thank you

Here https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... -paper.pdf on "267" it says
Whilst we develop and implement the new ‘Earned Settlement’ model we will
make further changes to settlement rules in the near term.......

which appears to indicate that 10 year change will not be implemented immediately? any thoughts on this?

I think it probably is too early to tell.

My wife is due to apply for ILR in June 2026 and I noted from the white paper the following:

Code: Select all

We will introduce a new English language requirement for all adult
dependants of workers and students at level A1 (Basic User) to align to
spousal and partner routes and will work towards increasing this
requirement over time.

We will introduce requirements to demonstrate progression to level A2
(Basic User) for any visa extension, and B2 (Independent User) for
settlement.

We will increase our existing requirements for settlement across the
majority of immigration routes from B1 to B2 (Independent User).

Code: Select all

We will also conduct a refresh of the Life in the UK test and how it
operates and consider measures to reduce the financial barriers to young
adults, who have lived here through their childhood, from accessing British
nationality.
So interested in knowing whether she will have to get a B2 and perhaps hold off getting a Life in the UK. But ye at this stage I guess we just don't know, have to wait and see. From the last changes they took months, if not years to implement and not all were applied to existing applicants, hopefully will be the same case this time around.

We have only a month to go before we apply and hoping nothing dramatic happens before that.

I found the following on this press release

Earned settlement and citizenship
Double the standard qualifying period for settlement to 10 years.

Expand the points-based system to both our settlement and citizenship rules, so they are based on contribution to the UK, with further details to be set out to Parliament by the end of the year.
