Will the new immigration laws affect my settled status / naturalisation process?

Post by BokeTsukkomi » Mon May 12, 2025 5:33 pm

I know it's all too new and questions abound, but I was about to start my (and my family's) naturalisation process but now I am not sure we qualify, and perhaps somebody in the sub can make things clearer.

We've been in the UK for more than six years now and have settled status, I have moved to the UK as a member of the EEA so the questions are:
  • Does the new immigration rules affect my current settled status?
  • I've checked the "Naturalisation booklet – The requirements and the process" - https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... 5+_V2_.pdf (published in May 25), and page 5 states that one of the criteria is "Have lived in the UK lawfully for the required time period (5 years, or 3 years if the spouse or civil partner of a British citizen)". So now I'm not sure if
    • The document is outdated
    • This is besides the settled status new 10-year period (i.e.: Besides settle status, you must have lived in the UK for five years)
    • Or something else
Essentially in a nutshell: Having settled status and lived in the UK for 6+ years, can I start my naturalisation process under the new rules?

Thanks in advance!

The new rules have only been proposed, they are not law and the old process still applies. Just follow the guidance you have linked. If you have held settled status for at least one year (and respect other requirements), you are eligible to apply. The new changes have only been proposed, they are not applied yet.
