Correcting Errors in British Naturalisation Application

Post by Silverfirn » Sat Aug 09, 2025 11:42 am

Hello,
I recently submitted my British naturalisation application (AN Form) online on 7 August 2025, with my biometrics appointment scheduled for 19 August 2025. However, I have realised that I made two errors while completing the application:

1. I misspelled two characters in my city’s name and omitted the state name in the “Place of Birth” section, which should match the details on my passport.
2. For my current employment, I mistakenly entered the start year as 2023 instead of 2022.

I would appreciate your guidance on the best way to correct these errors. Specifically, should I:
a. Cancel my application and biometric appointment and reapply, or
b. Include a cover letter with my supporting documents, explaining these mistakes and requesting that they be corrected?

Additionally, I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has experienced a similar situation and opted for the cover letter approach—were you able to have your errors corrected successfully through this method?

Thanks for your help.

A cover letter will be enough. No need to cancel your application and resubmit.

Thank you for the clarification. I appreciate your guidance. Based on your suggestion to submit the cover letter, I infer that there are instances where this approach has proven successful. This information is useful for my planning. As a mismatch in place of birth on a British naturalization certificate can result in refusal of an OCI card, I want to ensure I avoid such complications.

I have already finished uploading my documents on TLScontact, so no option to upload the cover letter online. In this situation, do I need to purchase the assisted service so that the staff can upload my cover letter during my biometric appointment? Additionally, is it possible to purchase this service on the same day as my appointment, or is it necessary to buy it online in advance?

Yes you will need to buy the additional service. I would recommend doing it ahead of time, don't know if it's possible to buy it on the same day.

Update

I contacted UKVI to discuss my situation and was provided with two possible courses of action. The first option was to cancel my application, as I have not yet attended the biometrics appointment. Alternatively, I could email "furthernationalityenquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk" explaining the necessary corrections, although any change would ultimately be at the discretion of the caseworker.
To keep things straightforward, I decided to cancel my application. UKVI advised that the refund process may take up to six weeks. While I was informed that I can reapply immediately after cancellation, the refund could potentially take longer to process.
My main concern is to ensure that this error does not cause complications when applying for OCI in the future, and I am not prepared to pay £450 for corrections to the naturalisation certificate.

Thank you, contorted_svy for your assistance and guidance throughout this process
