Irish spouse visa - Tunisian applicant questions

Post by Ahlexn » Wed Nov 05, 2025 2:15 pm

Hi all,

I’m Tunisian and married to an Irish citizen. I’m getting ready to apply for the Irish spouse (join family) visa and just want to make sure I understand a few things:

1. Where do I send my documents from Tunisia — is there an Irish Embassy or visa office that handles Tunisian applications?

2. Does my marriage certificate need to be apostilled or legalised by the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or is notarisation enough?

3. Is there any English test required for this visa? I can’t find anything about that on the Irish government site.

If anyone here applied from Tunisia or knows how it works locally, I’d really appreciate your advice.

Thanks.

Ireland's diplomatic representation in Tunisia is through an Honorary Consulate in Tunis, which can provide consular services, including visa support. The embassy that covers Tunisia is the Embassy of Ireland in Madrid, Spain:

Honorary Consulate of Ireland in Tunis
Address: Immeuble Raphael 2ème étage, 2nd Floor, Rue Lac Loch Ness, Les Berges du Lac, Tunis 1053, Tunisia
Telephone: (+216) 71 862 823 / 862 809
Fax: (+216) 93 490 0986

Embassy of Ireland in Madrid (covers Tunisia)
Address: Paseo de la Castellana 46-4, 28046, Madrid, Spain
Telephone: +34-91-4364093
Fax: +34-91-4351677
Website: www.embassyofireland.es

If any certification on which you seek to rely is not in English or Irish you will need to get a certified translation into (most likely) English. The translator must confirm the translation is accurate and provide their full name, signature, contact details, and the date of the translation. Whether a translator needs to meet certain requirements I do not know (the consulate may be able to assist there).

Original documents: You must submit both the original documents and their certified translations.

I cannot see that there is a formal language competence test required.

Thanks a lot for sharing that information!

Because there’s been so little clear guidance for Tunisian applicants, I actually started a test spouse-visa application just to see where the system would direct me to send the supporting documents. The portal advised me to send them to the Embassy of Ireland in Abu Dhabi, but it also mentioned that the documents themselves must be submitted to the Honorary Consulate of Ireland in Tunis.

It’s been confusing since different sources point to Madrid, Rabat, or Abu Dhabi, but it seems the consulate in Tunis still plays a role in collecting or forwarding the papers. I’ll update once I get an official confirmation.
