CAN I APPEAL A GTV ENDORSEMENT REFUSAL?

Post by Ruteceae » Wed Dec 17, 2025 7:42 pm

Hi everyone, my application was not endorsed by the Royal Society for exceptional promise. I submitted 10 research papers. I am the first author on one (a preprint from my PhD work) and on the second, a review paper. I am a second author on 8 other research articles. Here is what the reviewer sent.

"The independent expert reviewers were looking for compelling evidence already demonstrating a high
degree of originality, creativity and independence in research. The reviewers considered the novelty,
significance, and quality of your research and innovation vision to date, and how it has advanced or is
expected to advance your field. In particular, they were looking for a clear and credible plan for what you
will expect to do in the UK and how you will contribute to UK research and innovation excellence and to
broader society.
The independent expert reviewers and the panel chair noted that you have a PhD in Biology from the
University of Bath, completed in 2021; and you are currently working as a Research Associate at the
University of Exeter. They appreciated your dedication and enthusiasm as well as your achievements
during your studies and your contributions to the field. The reviewers also acknowledged that Prof XXXXX an Associate Professor in Molecular Microbiology at the University of XXXXX, provided a
strong letter of support.
However, the independent expert reviewers and the panel chair considered that your application did not
show the markers of exceptional promise and that it did not demonstrate unequivocal evidence of
potential for leadership in your field, as required under the assessment criteria for the Peer Review route
of the Global Talent (Exceptional Promise) category. They considered that your publication track record
is not exceptional noting that your application doesn't list any first-author peer-reviewed primary research
publications in a reputable journal arising from your PhD work or the subsequent postdoc period. They
acknowledged two first-author publications in your track record published after you completed your
PhD, but they noted that one is a preprint in bioRxiv, which has not yet undergone rigorous peer review
and the other is a review paper. Overall, the reviewers and the panel chair were unable to identify
compelling evidence demonstrating a high degree of originality, creativity, rigour and independence in
your own work, and potential for intellectual leadership within your field of talent. Furthermore, the
reviewers considered that you didn’t present a clear and credible plan, that would make you stand out,
for your planned contributions to UK research and innovation excellence.
In summary, the reviewers considered that there was insufficient evidence within your application to
suggest that you could be recognised as having exceptional promise and having the potential to be a
future leader in your field, and that your track record, career history and contributions to the field to date
were not strong enough to endorse you. The reviewers also considered that your application did not
demonstrate that the contributions you are expected to make to UK research and innovation excellence
and to wider society were of sufficient scale to merit endorsement for entry through the Global Talent
(Exceptional Promise) route"

Please, how do I appeal this decision?

There is no appeal process for endorsement refusal, you can ask for a review of the application if you think the evidence was not properly assessed.

I don't think a review will change anything in your case. The response letter is clearly mentioning that you're not eligible to be endorsed under the peer review route and the reasons why.

You can ask your employer for support on another route e.g. fast-track, based on your job as a researcher.
