Myself and partner on different visa types advice

Post by mhib » Sat Feb 28, 2026 12:26 pm

Hi,

I am being offered a relocation to the UK by my company with a sponsorship. The company is willing to move asap. However, my wife has applied fo a university scholarship (post doc) in the UK that will qualify her for a global talent visa, the condition is that she is not a resident of the UK at the time of approval. which is in around 6 months time.

My question is, will I be able to go on a work sponsorship visa. She can then await if she is granted the scholarship, if she is, then she can come on her own visa. If not Will I be able to apply for her for a partner visa retrospectively? Also, will be able to apply fo r that visa from overseas or should she be in the homy country to apply?

Also if she is granted the scholarship and the global talent visa attached. would i be able to drop my sponsorship and switch to a partner visa with her? given the added advantaged of that visa (I am able to work freelance in my role?)

Are you asking on behalf of someone else?

Your previous posts suggest that you already were in the UK.

In any case,

Yes to all.

Unsure what you mean with retrospectively. Your wife can apply for a Skilled Worker dependant visa (not a partner visa which is something different) either together with you or later, and the validity will be from the date of approval of her visa. She has to apply from outside the UK, either in the home country or elsewhere.

Yes, you can switch from Skilled Worker to a Global Talent dependant visa later if you wish, from within the UK. Note that this will reset your ILR clock.
