Applying for Child born outside the UK

Post by Engineer-Nawar » Thu May 07, 2026 10:02 pm

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some clarification on my child’s eligibility for British citizenship and the correct application route.

My child was born outside the UK. Both my child and I now have Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), and we have been living in the UK for more than 5 years. I have also already applied for naturalisation.

Most of the information I can find about Form MN1 seems to focus on children born in the UK, so I’m confused about what applies in my case.

Since my child was born outside the UK but already has ILR now, should I still use the MN1 application, or is there another application route/form that I should use instead?

Also, if MN1 or any other form is the correct one, could someone please share the direct application link for the correct process?

By the way, can I use the same referees for me and my child?

I would really appreciate any guidance or similar experiences.

Thank you.

MN1 guidance https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... le-version your case is Registration at the Home Secretary’s discretion – Section 3(1).

Form https://visas-immigration.service.gov.uk/your-location

You can use the same referees for you and child.

What is the UK immigration status of the other parent?

Many thanks for your reply.

I can understand from your reply that I can use the MN1 form for my case.

Also, the link that you have sent for the form does not work.

Both parents got ILR and applied for citizenship 2 weeks ago.

I think you could have included the child when you both applied for naturalisation.

You need to answer where you are located - the link works for me. You can always search on Google for MN1 online application form.

Thank you very much indeed. The link now works.

I have another question. As a parent, I have already applied for naturalisation and my application is being considered. What to answer for this question (as part of the child application):

Are either of the parents of the child (as stated in this application) applying for naturalisation as a British citizen on an AN form?

Yes
No

The reason I am asking this question is I don't remember whether I used AN for or something else.

Many thanks in advance.

There’s only one form for adult naturalisation: AN. That’s what you used.
