Immigration for disabled sons boyfriend

Post by Momhelpingson » Thu May 14, 2026 12:07 pm

Autistic son (diagnosed autistic , OCD, inattentive ADHD) trying to bring his boyfriend of 2 years to the UK to live together. Any advice on what to do, looked at different types of visas and can only find spouse, fiance, and unmarried partner, they don't want to get married within 6 months of living together but they also haven't lived together for the two years that is needed for the unmarried partner, he can't travel to America to live with his bf for two years before they apply as he needs everyday help, with coping and dealing with everyday situations that living in America away from his family would be too much. And there isn't a way that I know of that allows his bf to leave here to meet that criteria as well. I've read it could possibly be possible under a certain circumstances that he could possibly come over as his carer but that's usually for relatives but as they would be living in their own accommodations as well.
Any help on how to go forward with this would be greatly appreciated

On the face of what you have explained there doesn't appear to be any visa option that may cover your son's needs - definitely no boyfriend/girlfriend getting to know visas. Care type visas have to be sponsored by employers in the care sector. There's no room in the immigration system to negotiate, applicant has to comply vith immigration regulations. It sounds harsh but I'm sure you realise that the government is trying to make it harder for immigrants, those who'd like to come and those who are already in the UK with valid visas.

Perhaps the boyfriend can come to the UK as a visitor - benefitting from his US passport - and stay for a few weeks. After spending some time living together, they can decide moving towards a more engaging situation so they might be able to apply for an appropriate visa.

Thank you both for your replies ye I read there is certain circumstances on why they haven't lived together for the two years, I didn't know if that would fall under any, I did mention about him coming over for the 6 months and then he returns back and then they can decide further how they would want to go about this, they really are making it harder and way more expensive, once again thank you for replies

Please note that whilst US citizens can enter the UK as visitors under the visa waiver programme, they still have to comply with all visitor visa rules, such as no work, must leave at the end of 6 months (max), no extensions or other visa applications whilst in the UK, etc.
