Working in the UK/EU from Australia

Post by beanboy » Mon Jan 19, 2009 2:25 am

Hello. This is the first time that I have joined a chat group and I do hope I will be able to explain my self. My wife and I are both Australian citizens although we have just discovered that my wife is most likely able to apply for German citizenship. Her parents both came to Australia in the 1950's and based on this as well as a long German heritage, this possibility seems quite reasonable.

Being a non german speaker I would like to find out what the possibility will be of both my wife, as a German citrizen and me as an accompanying spouse being able to work in the UK, or for that matter any EU country. We also have a little boy who is currently 6 who would of course come with us.

We are bothy very keen on the idea of coming to Europe for a few years and working to cover our costs.

We do not want to move permanently, just work for a year or 2 or 3 and experience life in another culture.

Thanks very much for your time and any leads that you could to allow me to obtain the correct answer would be most appreciated.

Best wishes, Tony H

If interested in the United Kingdom, then http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk
Look for EEA Family Permit.

Would you be interested in British citizenship?

Regarding German citizenship, did your wife's parents become Australian citizens before or after she was born (or did they not become Australian)?

That will determine whether your wife is German. If she is German, then your son probably is also.

Hi Jaj and thanks for getting back to me.

My wife was born well before both her parents obtained Australian citizenship, so from what I understand she will most likely be able to apply.

Neither of us are interested in Englsh citizenship, I am mainly interested in being able to work as an accompaning spouse of a german citizen in the UK.

I will have a look at the link you have given.

Thnaks a lot and always happy for any other info if you think it to be relevant.

Best wishes, Tony
