Born in UK child: ILR, Citizenship, or Visa Extension? (Current visa expires 4th Oct)

Post by aashishc » Wed Jul 29, 2026 12:39 pm

Hi,

I am applying for my ILR via priority service early August. My daughter was born in the UK (under 1(3)) and her current dependant visa expires on 2nd October. We have travel planned for late November.

Can you clarify these things for her:

1. Can I apply for her ILR along with mine early August?

2. Or, after getting my settlement, can I apply straight for her British Citizenship (Section 1(3)) using the new 30-day Priority Service? If yes, how possible is it to get the priority slot?

3. Due to travel constrains and current visa expiring early october, If I choose NOT to get her citizenship right now, can I later apply for her ILR after mine is approved?

4. If option 3 is not possible, will extending her current visa reset her clock? If I can extend, what exact visa category should we extend hers to?

5. Since she is a child under 18, is the citizenship ceremony skipped completely and the certificate posted straight to our home?

6. With an October 2nd visa expiry and November 29th travel, is the 30-day Citizenship Priority + 1st British Passport timeline safe enough, or should we just extend her visa to avoid the risk?

Thanks in advance!

You asked a number of questions that pertain to child's ILR - those need to be asked in the ILR subforum, not here.

I will attempt to address as many registration related queries as possible.

Your child can only apply for registration once you obtain your ILR, not before. We don't know how easy it is to get the priority slot, this is a very new service still and we don't have data about how easy it is to get it or how long it actually takes to process applications that use it.

Her certificate will be posted to your home, but no guarantee as to how long it would take for that to happen to then apply for a UK passport.
All advice comes from personal research and experience and should not be regarded as professional opinion.
