How To Calculate Earning Period For Independent Contractor

Dear All,

I am an independent Contractor, my contract of service is of 3 years which started in Jan 2008.
I receive payments again my invoices, but with delays, my last invoice that I have been paid yet was of august 2008 and payment reached my account in December.

I wanted to know what period of earning should I use?

Either January 2008 --- August 2008

Or Can I mention January 2008 --- December 2008 (But invoice up to December is not cleared yet).

Please help.
