I think they only accept cash or demand drafts. The best way is to go to designated Standard Chartered Bank branches (listed here). Carry your original passport with you. There are different fees for different visa types and they revise the exchange rate on a monthly basis so call up their call centre at +91 80 4008 4008 (Bangalore number) or send them e-mail to find out visa specifics. The bank will also be able to tell you the current fees and any upcoming revision they know of.

Carry the amount in cash and fill out two forms, one is a white DD form and one a yellow form. Submit these along with the passport at a teller. The teller will send your passport to be photocopied and will return it to you, and issue you a DD in the name of the British Deputy High Commission, <city>. Standard Chartered will not charge you any fees for this service.

Otherwise, you can have any bank issue a DD in the name of the British High Commission or British Deputy High Commission for your region, but most banks charge a fee for this (unlike Standard Chartered). The advantage is that your bank branch is local to you, which may not be true of a designated Standard Chartered branch.

Lastly you can pay in cash at the VFS centre, but they will charge you for the privilege.

As far as I know, VFS do not accept cheques, even if payable at par, nor do they accept credit card payment.

You will also need to pay Rs. 200 (in cash) as courier charges at the time you submit your application. This is in addition to the visa processing fee.
