What does a my work permit allow me to do in Europe?

Post by zkzkz » Mon Mar 09, 2009 2:06 pm

I have a work permit and 5yr leave to remain and an office job in the UK.

What happens if my employer sends me to visit a client in France or anywhere else in Europe? Do I need any special visa or is regular non-immigration business travel not an issue? Does my visa to Britain include business travel to Europe?

I'm not from a country that normally needs a visa to visit European countries for tourism and such.

You work permit and leave to remain is specific to UK, it does not allow you to travel and/or work in other EU countries.
For you to be able to do that your employer will require to apply for business visa / schengen visa on your behalf.

I think it would depend on the definition one gives to work/business.
If the poster is, for instance, an American and he is going to France for
a couple of days or so on business related to the company he works for
in the UK then I am quite sure a French WP would not be necessary.

That description fits pretty closely. Where would I find the precise rules allowing this?

You need to check with the Embassy of the country you intend travelling to.

Sorry, I did mention France as an example in the original scenario. But I'll also have to travel to other European countries like Belgium or Italy.

I'm more interested in knowing what to look for and where to look so I can find the answer myself in the future for other countries. So an example for any Schengen country so I can familiarize myself with the language to look for would be helpful.

Presumably you are in the UK.

Then as Babble suggested just contact the embassy of the country to which you wish to travel. I'm sure they all have websites written in English.
