EU regulations do allow you to travel without a visa but the Spanish implementation does obviously not. Two points of problems you may have to face: airline check-in and Spanish immigration.

Complaints about their non-compliance to SOLVIT or straight to the EU Comission. SOLVIT may come back to you in time but complaints to the EU comission may take a long time.

Who are you flying with, knapps? Also, are you and your spouse travelling together?

This is the same topic as >>this<<.

What do yee all want to do in Spain, especially considering the attitude of their embassies?

If you are looking for "usual" summer-holidays, I'd recommend Malta: It's a lovely place, and they allow you to enter without any problems, as can be seen >>here<< and >>here<<.
