What exactly is BOC? Any benefits?

Post by Linaok » Thu May 14, 2009 10:02 pm

I have recently discovered the term "british overseas citizen". I have read a little about this.

I was born in 1980 in a former British colony, but I hold citizenship of that country. Do I still qualify for this passport?

What are the benefits of holding this title?

Is it a real passport one can travel with?

thanks!

I also just read that if you were born before 1982 in a country of commonwealth member you may be eligible for some form of British benefits?...This also applies to me in addition to above question.

Can anyone expand on this? It sounds too incredible to be true...

I did some searching and it seems like there is no actual benefit to registering as a BOC if you already have citizenship. Hmm. Thanks for the reply.

Not by birth! Britain does not give any form of nationality based on birth in an independent country (and why should it?).

Did your father retain his British nationality at independence of the colony?
