About ILR/citizenship.

Post by Hammad.Y » Sat May 16, 2009 10:51 pm

Hi all, hope u all r doing well. Ok the thing is rite now i'm in the UK on PSW wich i jst got this feb.
I really need an expert's advice in my query, wich is, in 1982 the rule abt nationality was that if somebody stays in the UK for three years was given nationality. So, the thing is my parents were here since 1980 n i was born in 1984 and then we stayed here till 1988/89, wich makes it more than three years after my birth. But my father didnt claimed nationality. So, can anyone please tell me that can i claim my citizenship now, as i have my british birth certificate and if required i can get my parent's passports on wich my entries are to prove dat i was in the UK for more than three years.
Quick and Expert advice would be highly appreciated.
Thanx in advance.

Were your parents granted Indefinite Leave to Remain in the United Kingdom? If so, when?

If your parents did not apply for and get ILR before you were born, then you are not a British citizen.

Even if they got ILR after you were born, it is now too late to apply for British citizenship on that basis (age limit of 18).

And you didn't live in the UK until age 10, so you can register as British that way either.

So you're out of luck, sorry.

If you were born in Northern Ireland you may claim Irish citizenship.
