British Citizenship

Post by Allie » Wed Jun 10, 2009 3:01 pm

My husband is Mexican and came to the UK in March 2007 on a spouse visa (I'm British). In July 2008 we went to Mexico for 10 months as I was on maternity leave. His spouse visa expired at the beginning of March 2009 so he had to get a new spouse visa before coming back to the UK at the end of March as he was told he couldn't apply for ILR given we were not at the time in the UK. We plan on staying in the UK and he would like to get British citizenship. I've read that the minimum period for qualification is 3 years if married to a British citizen. I wanted to know if this is actually the case and does the spouse visa qualify him for the residential status that is asked for? We also spent 263 days outside of the UK while in Mexico, would this disqualify him? If anyone has any other tips on getting him citizenship quicker it would be much appreciated.

No quick way round it.

Minimum 3yrs wait. There are limits on the numbers of days that you can be absent from the UK, otherwise you will have to make them up before you can apply for citizenship.
