Is Odd jobs possible under HSMP.

Post by vs999 » Fri Sep 02, 2005 8:59 am

Hi All,

I'll be travelling to UK in a week time. Just wanted to check that is there any restriction on the type of jobs we can undertake in UK under HSMP.

I'm from IT field with 7 yrs of experience but in case it takes long to get the job in my chosen field, I just wanted to know if its leagally okay to take up any other job to sustain.

Hoping for a response.

Also looking for acco around London any pointers would be helpful.

Cheers,
VS

yes, it is legally OK to take any job. but it's important to get a job in your field before your 1 year EC is up for renewal purposes. good luck! :)

Make sure you can hit the ground running in your job search by having a UK formatted CV and a decent cover letter you can use to apply to jobs. For some people that seems to be a major sticking point in getting a job. Check online- most university career service websites for UK unis have samples you can follow.

For accomodation- try the Loot newspaper ( newsagents, but you have to get there first thing in the morning cause they sell out) or noline at loot.co.uk or gumtree.co.uk ( or.com, not sure) they have listings for rooms to rent, apts to rent, etc. AT least by using those two sites you can get an idea of cost by area of Londonthe South East and whats available.

Amhilde,

I think you mentioned a very critical point regarding the preparation of 'UK formatted CV and a decent cover letter'.

For HSMP hopefuls like me, is it possible to share with me a sampe UK CV format and a cover letter, please?

Thanks for your help. Regards, Taikoo

taikoo-

The Times Online has a good summary of what should be included on a CV here:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/section/0,,8171,00.html or

http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/cv.htm (more information- and has a TON of examples if you scroll to the bottom and click on examples)

I would include that your nationality and work status should be included at the top with the other information on phone numbers and the like. I have seen British CVs with birthdate listings- this, along with nationality, is almost never included on US resumes because of our disclosure laws. When you post your work status just put "Legally Able to Work in the UK"- hopefully this will get around questions of the HSMP thing. I dont know if one HAS to have nationality listed, but mine does and Ive never had much of a problem.

Please also note that the Kent website has examples and help for writing cover letters. These are extremely important for applying to jobs in the UK. You can write out a few standard ones depending on the job you are applying to and then change according to the company you are applying to. Writing a few of these before you go, and ensure that the english is perfect in the letter, will help speed up your process immensely.

Hope that helps!
