Leaving UK to apply for spousal visa-How long of a wait ???

I'm returning to the USA to apply for a Spousal visa -If I have a very complete and strong application, How long of a wait sholud I expect before I can re-enter the Uk ? Does anyone know ? is it days ? weeks ? or months ? Thanks

can you not apply with in the country ?
is you married partener in the uk ?

Suspect the OP is on a visit visa here from which there is no switching.
