Question: Does anyone think that Alan Johnson will be fair?

Do you think he will be more sensible than Jaquie Smith when it comes to immigration laws. Can you see him listening to the MAC or taking the advice of restricting work permits to shortage category occupations only? Was that just a Jacqui smith project that will probably not be thought of anymore?

I will be very surprised if immigration isn't tightened up and work permits limited only to highly skilled people and occupations where there is a shortage.

That being said, Alan Johnson will be in office for less than 1 year so he won't have much of a chance to do anything drastic. If and when the Tories talk about immigration then they are the people you should be listening to as they will be in government this time next year.

I've already spoken to them about this. They said that the Labour government basically made immigration "all over the place" and that a simple cap was needed to ensure the right people come into the country. They did NOT agree with anything being retrospective and did not favour breaking the link between work permits and the right to stay. I just want to know if Jacqui Smith's proposals or interest in restricting Tier 2 work permits to shortage occupations only would come into effect before next June?

It's a difficult one to answer to be honest. If they did do it before June then they might pick up a few more votes for the general election, however Labour are in such a mess that i don't think they even know what they're doing right now.

Personally, i hope that the restriction is brought in as soon as possible however i don't think it will happen before next June.

Let me guess, you are a Highly Skilled Migrant who forgets that they are migrants themselves.

Hello again GSOtodd

Tier 2 has come into effect. Some people on the old work permit scheme probably could not score enough points on the new Tier 2 scheme, but there are transitional arangements. My feeling is is that if they just restricted new people coming to the UK or staying on to shortage occupations, there would be similar transitional arrangements for current work permit holders or Tier 2 people.
