1. Is there a difference between the 2?
2. I need to get my national insurance number, what do i need to do and provide?
If your British passport says that you are a "British citizen" on the details page, then you are a British citizen. There are other statuses of British national, although it's unlikely that any of these would apply to you. How did you gain your British nationality?
British citizens have the right of abode in the UK and are entitled to live and work in the UK without being subject to any sort of immigration control or restrictions.
(Incidentally, if you're a British citizen, you're as much a British citizen whether or not you hold a British passport - a person can hold a British citizen passport because he is a British citizen, not the other way round. The passport is a travel document. However, if you are a British citizen intending to live and work in the UK, it makes good sense to have a British passport.)
There's some information about applying for a National Insurance number
here.
