Q about CP

Post by Wanderer » Tue Sep 27, 2005 10:56 am

Just reading about Civil Partnerships in relation to Immigration. My questions is does this Act give same-sex couples the same rights as Unmarried opposite sex partners?

what I'm getting at is it seems on reading the docs that a same-sex couple, say one UK, one visa national, register their CP and be granted Entry to UK. Without the parlarver us striaght guys have to go through.

Am I reading it wrong of will they have to have the same two year relationship rule to get ILR?

Thanks

Steve

Reread!

The same two year rule does exist!

My positive discrimination scanner went off prematurely!

The UK Government went out of its way not to call a CP a "same-sex marriage". However in terms of immigration rules, those who enter into a CP, or intend to, will really be placed in the same sort of situation as opposite-sex couples who marry, or intend to.

Unmarried couples? The immigration rules do not discriminate between same-sex and opposite-sex couples. Assuming the (same) conditions are met then each type of couple is treated the same for immigration purposes.

And I put my hands together for the Government.

I am not a rainbow flag waver for gay rights, but discrimination against gay people in the day-to-day life is bad enough as it is. School, coming out to friends, brutality, hassle at work, etc, to name a few.

Giving us same legal rights and immigration rights has allowed me, and many others, the opportunity to be with the ones we love, and feel part of society.

And this is not to the detriment of heterosexual couples.

I fee *very* proud to be a citizen of this GREAT country.
