just had a look at the dependant visa application that one would make out of the UK ...

why do they ask for national insurance no in the application form?.

because they want to see if you have applied for benefit and also NI number check for taxes too.

but not sure how this can be applied to someone who applies for dependant visa ...

i would ignore that bit if i was you because ur apply for a child and if they need it they would send you a letter asking for it, which i doubt they would.

Some may have been in the UK at some point (before this particular application), applied for one, and got it! And since it's a number you have for life, they're just checking. Obviously, most applicants will not have one if they have not been to the UK, or in a capacity where they could have applied for one. It's not the be all and end all of the application.
So simply fill it in if you have it, and leave it out if you don't!
